These brave men who suffered sexual assault come forward.
Millions of men in the United State have been victims of rape and sexual abuse. By the age of 18, around 16% of men will have experienced sexual abuse, estimates the U.S. Centers for Disease control. About 1 in 6 men has been sexual abused and 3% of men—around 1 out of every 33 you meet—have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetimes, according to the US National Institute of Justice.
The number of male sexual assault victims may be even larger, however, since many men don’t report them. Research from 2015, ‘Silent Suffering: Supporting The Male Survivors Of Sexual Assault’, revealed that as few as 3.9% of male victims of rape and sexual assault in the UK report the assault to police.
“In many cases we find that it’s more difficult for men to be believed, or to take their case seriously,” said Steve LaPore, founder and director of 1in6. “I think we’ve done a pretty good job of seeing men’s roles as bystanders and preventers, but we don’t recognize men who are survivors of sexual assault and abuse.”
