The latest track from PrettiBoiRoq is about loving yourself and flipping the bird to anyone who says otherwise. The Gen Z gay rapper wrote “Wanna Be Me” after he says he was body shamed for not looking as svelte and buffed as Arad Winwin, the gay porn star featured in his “You Don’t Own Me” music video.
“I suffer with body dysmorphia,” he reveals. “So the cruel comments hit me hard.”
PrettiBoiRoq admits he wasn’t always so pretti. “I was the fat, poor, trailer park kid for most of my early childhood.”
He grew up in a tiny town in North Carolina called Pamlico County. After his mother became an addict, his parents divorced and he was raised by his religious dad and step mother. “I moved out of the house and lived on my own as soon as I turned 18.”
He arrived to Los Angeles in 2015 and released his first EP the next year. The pop-hop album included some cute beats like “PrettiBoi Anthym” and “New Sh!t.”
On his next album, he’s making an effort to evolve his sound with more introspective works that hone in on his hip hop roots. “Wanna Be Me,” the first single from his upcoming Haus of Ken album, has a slightly darker, Trap sound to it.
“I think the LGBTQ community could use more than typical club bangers,” he explains. “We need songs with more substance that represent all facets of our stories. I’ve been writing about issues in my personal life, including how I’ve overcome past relationships and the struggles I dealt with growing up.”
“My hope is that I can inspire someone the way so many artists inspired me.”
PrettiBoiRoq’s “Wanna Be Me” is available now on all digital platforms including iTunes, Spotify, Pandora, and Tidal.
